February 2015: Meet the Candidates

Feb15 Breakfast

Our Meet the Candidates February breakfast meeting was an opportunity for our State Election candidates to address topics relevant to our Business Community, including our Hospital, Rail Line, reforms to the Coal-Mining Planning process and the Muswellbrook by-pass. Candidates included Lee Watts (Independent), Martin Rush (Labor), Michael Johnsen (Nationals), John Kaye (Greens), and Richard Stretton (Christian Democratic Party).

NSW Labor committed to the Muswellbrook By-pass and formally announced support via Shadow Minister for Roads, Michael Daley, and recommitted by Mr Rush on the day. Committing the NSW State Government to sign the $10m funding pledge with the Federal Government (currently delayed).

Ms Watts and Mr Kaye agreed to push for a new hospital, whilst the remaining parties agreed that previous funding should have been provided for a new hospital, this was not the case of previous State Governments. Given the total funding to date, a new hospital would not be a viable nor responsible use of future public funds.

The Chamber would like to thank the Muswellbrook Workers Club and Muswellbrook Cinema for providing a great venue for this panel discussion, and our facilitator, Garry Blair of Upper Hunter ABC.
